Best blooming plants that thrive indoors
We recently discussed how to add color to your home with the use of indoor plants that distinguish themselves with striking foliage .
You can read about these plants here: best houseplants to add color to your home
But what I would like to talk about today is how to add a big burst of colors by introducing blooming plants that can add an extra lively touch to any room.
1- Kalanchoes
Kalanchoes are very hardy drought tolerant blooming succulents , they are very easy to care for and offer pretty long lasting bursts of little blooms in a variety of colors ranging from yellow to ho pink to blush and white.
2- Anthuriums
Anthuriums symbolize hospitality and they make a great hostess gift. These gorgeous hardy heart shaped flowers are available in hot pink, purple, green, white and even blush.
They are easy to care for just remember they love the humidity.
3- Orchids
Orchids are also easy to care for and add a great deal of elegance to any room.
They are a lot easier to care for than one would think, just use the correct orchid potting mix and DO NOT OVERWATER. They need the equivalent on an ice cube worth of water per week and they enjoy being root bound so do not replant them.
There are a lot of varieties of orchids and they are available in a huge range of colors.
4- African violets
yes these are my favorite their dark velverty leaves are contrasted by plush blooms in shades of purple, pink, white, green…there are double blooms varieties that are simply breathtaking.

5- Cyclamens
Also known as Persian or florist’s cyclamen, Cyclamen persicum are commonly grown as potted colour, placed into decorative containers or baskets for indoor decoration – but they also grow well in covered outdoor environments like balconies and patios.
Most often grown in pots indoors, cyclamen like plenty of natural light. Put in a well-lit, cool but draught- free spot – preferably with an hour or two of sunlight each morning, although no strong sunlight
They are sensitive to rot, so the aim is to wet the soil, not the flowers or foliage. I water mine by placing water in the saucer and let it soak the water up from the base. ( same as I do for African violets)
Do not over-water .
6 - Bromeliads
Bromeliads also make great indoor plants. They are very showy and have very few needs and problem pests. With the right care, you can enjoy bromeliads in your home or office year round.
Bromeliads are adapted to withstand drought, but are much less tolerant of being over-watered which can cause root rot. It is important that your bromeliad is planted in a potting mix that allows for fast drainage.
7- Hydrangeas
Known for their big ball shaped clusters of blooms, hydrangeas add a nice touch of color and elegance top any room.
Hydrangea require large container filled with high quality potting mix. Place the plant where it receives bright light. Outdoor grown hydrangeas tolerate light shade, but indoor plants need plenty of light (but not intense, direct sunlight). Water your potted hydrangea houseplant frequently when the plant is blooming but be careful not to overwater. Decrease the amount of water after blooming but never allow the potting mix to become bone dry. If possible, water potted hydrangea houseplants with distilled water or rainwater, as tap water generally contains chlorine and other chemicals.
Use a humidifier if the indoor air is dry or place the plant on a humidity tray. Hydrangea is happiest in a cool room with temperatures between 50- and 60-degrees especially during blooming.
8- Gloxinias
These easy to care for indoor flowering plants are relatives of the African violets.
Their blooms last about two months, and the plants prefer bright, filtered sunlight and moderately moist soil.
