Easy ways to decorate for fall
Yes it is here! it is officially pumpkin spice season and even if here in San Diego we might still be experiencing summer like temperatures we are all ready to put to rest those summer bikinis and enjoy a bit of sweater weather .
The tingling scents of spiced lattes , the vibrant and cozy colors of pumpkins, the soft and warming textures of those sweaters tucked in your closed just awaiting that first hint of crip air to arrive…
Well while we still enjoying those last rays of summer like sunshine, here are a few easy and cost effective ways to add a touch of Autumn to your living spaces.
1- Plants
We have previously discussed the importance adding live plants to your living spaces and how plants can in fact positively impact the quality of your daily life and uplift your moods, live plants are also a fairly inexpensive way to add a touch of seasonal magic to your indoor spaces.
Weather you are trying to spruce up your home office space to increase your productivity or simply add an extra zen touch to your self care evening post work ritual , these plants are sure to help you create a little indoor Autumn much needed changeover.
Here are some of my favorite fall inspired indoor plants :
Crotons - The Croton is one of my very favorite house plants for Fall color, simply because it is absolutely stunning. Its leaves are big and bright, often displaying deep orange, red, and yellow colors, depending on the variety. Keep your croton in a sunny window (mine sits near my Eastern facing window) and water deeply when the soil feels dry. This tropical plant loves humidity, too.One of the best and charming houseplants because it appears in a variety of colors, leaf shapes, and sizes, which makes it a great decor this fall. If you’re new to this plant, avoid moving the Croton plant as much as possible to prevent shock and falling leaves.
Bromeliads - Though they won’t bear any fruit, Bromeliad plants are a distant relative of the pineapple. The Bromeliad plant comes in orange, red, and a variety of deep colors. All of these colors are absolutely perfect for the fall. These plants will also purify the air. Bromeliads are tolerant of low sunlight and they like consistently moist soil. Make sure the roots aren’t soggy to prevent rot.
Calathea Medallion - Did you know some Calathea Medallion varieties fold up slightly during the nighttime, revealing the colorful undersides of their striking leaves? A brilliant green pattern on top, and a deep burgundy underneath. It’s one of the houseplants to add to your home this autumn season.
Madagascar dragon Tree - Dark green leaves edged in purple-red, the Madagascar Dragon Tree quite looks like ornamental grass growing from a bamboo stem. Dragon Tree plants are excellent plants for removing harmful toxins from the air, so it’s perfect as bedroom plants for better sleep.
Prayer Plant - Similar to the Calathea Medallion, the Prayer Plant has dark, olive-green leaves accented with purple-red veins, which makes it an excellent decor this fall season. We suggest placing it on tabletops or hanging baskets since it’s a sprawling plant. The Prayer Plant folds up slightly during the nighttime like it’s actually praying.
Anthuriums - A natural air purifier, the antrhurium flower is perfect for any home. It can flower in red, orange, white, and yellow. And the petals are incredibly glossy. To care for these pretty plants, place them in a bright window. Water the plant regularly, and deeply. About once a week should do. Always water on the same day. Fertilize your plant every six months to promote regular blooming. This is the perfect houseplant for indoor fall color.
2 - Pumpkins and Gourds
Talk about seasonal magic! Pumpkins are available in so many sizes, textures and gourds are a pretty inexpensive ways to add so much atmosphere to your counter tops and window sills. You can go with the warm yellows and orange varieties or you can create a completely different look by using white pumpkins, gourds and fairy tail pumpkins or even mix them all us, the possibilities seem endless.
Did I mention they last for months!….and make amazing planters as well, we offer succulent pumpkins every year and they are always out most pre- ordered item for the Thanksgiving holiday.
3- Candles
Candles are an easy addition to just about all different styles of rooms. They offer a great decorative accent , both lit and unlit, not to mention the ability their aromas have to improve your mood and create a more intimate atmosphere to ease your self-care rituals.
They are available in so many shapes, sizes your choices are truly endless. I am personally in love with the shimmer collection by Aqua De Soi
4 - Preserved Flowers
We offer a few preserved flowers in our studio, some sold by stem, some in small bundles you can mix and match and a few as pre made bouquets just readuy for you to drop in a vase.
Personally I enjoy them year round i have a few dried palm leaves in my house as well as dried lavender.
I think they can add a gentle boho vibe with their natural tones and they offer a magnitude of fun textures opening the door to endless design options.
5 - Stove Top Simmer Potpourri
They are a very inexpensive old fashoioned way to add a magical scent to your homes …
Just toss them in a pot filled with water and let them simmer away.
Easy way to hold on to the seasonal aromas of autumn but also a very simple way to decorate a table top . Just fill pretty corktop jars with all the dried citrus slices, cinnamom sticks, star anise and place them on a nice tray perhaps ever in bwtween candles.
The recipes for these are also endless, you can use dehidrated apples and oranges , cinnamon sticks, star anise, dried rosemary and sage, cloves, eucalyptus leaves….they are so veratile you can create one fore every different season or mood.
