Amazing Proteas
Talk about “ Wow” factor in any arrangements! From Kings To Queens to all in-betweens, these blooms are so unique and lush they are a sure show- stopper. They pack a lot of punch for the bucks so to speak. What I mean is that even a single bloom is dramatic enough to brighten up any room on its own, not to mention they are a very, VERY long lasting flower.
They are so versatile we use them as room decor, we love them in wedding arches and even bridal bouquets. Pink proteas offer a very natural almost desert vibe and lend themselves beautifully to boho style designs while pincushion proteas offer a more summery tropical feel. We like to pair the later with gingers and heliconias and orchids for an Island look.
I can’t tell you how many customers just walked in my flower shop and walked out with a single protea gift wrapped.
Proteas are not only the coolest but also some of the oldest flowering plants on the planet, with fossils dating back 300 million years.
Their name is deep rooted in Greek Mythology after the Shape- changing Greek God, Proteus.
The Protea family includes more than 1500 species, which include large-flowered Banksia, spiderlike Grevillea, pincushion (Leucospermum) flowers, and even macadamia nuts.
Although South Africa first comes to mind when talking about Proteas, It is actually Australia that hosts the largest collection of Protea species on the planet—over 850. South Africa comes in second with about 330 species.
The king protea became South Africa’s national flower in 1976 and it is so called because of its resemblance to a crown. It is the largest of all proteas and it appears on South African birth certificates and passports, as well as on the South African 5-Rand coin. and it is the logo for the South African National cricket team.
Proteas are used medicinally as a cough syrup.
Surprisingly, proteas are as strong as they are gorgeous. They can withstand the toughest of weather conditions including wildfires. Their blooms can thrive after wildfires due to the scorching of their outer shell, allowing dormant buds to finally emerge!
It is not a suprise that proteas symbolize diversity, transformation and courage.
Here is one of our favorite designs that uses pincushion proteas: SAN DIEGO SERENADE
