Inspired By The Moon
Tonight, make sure to take a few moments to look up at the sky and admire the full warmth and glowing magnificence of the Harvest Moon. Yes, the Harvest Moon tonight on October 5th.
Generally speaking, we refer to the full moon closest to the Fall Equinox in September as the Harvest Moon but hey: 2017 has proven to be quite a different year, so this little celestial quirk isn't that surprising at all! :)
We normally refer to the October Full Moon as the "Hunter's Moon" because it coincides with the beginning of Deer Hunting Season, but the Harvest Moon that normally coincides with September instead became the "Corn Moon." The last time we saw the Harvest Moon in October was 8 years ago and it will happen again three years from now....a Good Omen, I hope!
In light of this and thanks to a long overdue vacation that coincided with the need for a new Fall Catalogue, I decided to create something inspire by the glowing tones of the moon.
I named this arrangement " Harvest Moon"...also after my favorite Neil Young Song.
I chose a low rectangular ceramic container. First of all, I love using any container that is not see-through and covers my mechanics, and secondly I wanted to create something that would also work as a centerpiece. Thanksgiving is coming up and I am tired of the overly used spent "designs" of random Mums and poms with a few wheats arranged in foam over a cheap plastic saucer.
I wanted to keep an organic feel to the arrangement, so I added the textural Craspedia balls. I used a combination of yellow and black mini callas that, to me, resembled the dark mystery that surrounds the moon. I also noticed they tied in perfectly with the dark centers of the mini sunflowers that scream "fall" and "harvest." I balanced the strong pull of the callas with some folded dark tea leaves and of course, mixed in yellow and green roses woven through a bed of green hydrangeas.
I added yellow cymbidium orchids because...well I could add orchids to just about anything!
I hope you enjoyed this - stay tuned for some more designs ...and new Fall and Winter Design Classes!
